MBC FLIES PROPRIETOR OF DAVINA FURNITURES TO CHINA

Kasenza earned the month-long trip after emerging winner in the entrepreneurship of small scale enterprise category in last year’s MBC’s Innovations Awards.

“This is a one-in-a-lifetime opportunity and a dream come true for me,” said Kasenza in an interview before his departure at Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe.

He explained that the trip would provide him with a chance to expose his talent on an international platform while learning from fellow furniture makers in China.

In her remarks, MBC's Public Relations Officer Thembi Malinki said the awardees’ international trips are also supplementary to President Mutharika’s Buy Malawi Strategy as they sell Malawian skill and expose local products on the international market.

Kasenza, also a former lecturer of Lilongwe Technical College, has since challenged youths in the country to always stay focused and never give up on their dream citing his respective achievement as an example to emulate.

Each one of the ten last year’s awardees will fly to China and Egypt under the sponsorship of the respective embassies to Malawi.

The Lilongwe based furniture maker is third in line.

KARONGA CHITIPA CHIEFS POLITICIANS

In honoring the wishes of people of Karonga and Chitipa and the works of late Bingu wa Mutharika, President Arthur Peter Mutharika on Friday endorsed the renaming of the Karonga-Chitipa Road to Bingu Highway.

Traditional and religious leaders and common people from the two districts have good memories of Bingu because he ended their multi-decade transport problems. As such they have been requesting the Presidency to consider the name change.

Speaking at Baka Community Day Secondary School - where the President made the pronouncement- Paramount Chief Kyungu said people from the two districts know what they are talking about when they ask for special reverence for Bingu in relation to what he did.

“Bingu died and was buried. He didn't take the road with him. We are all using the road. It’s not only DPP people using it. Let's learn to honour people who do great things for us,” said Kyungu.

Addressing the large gathering President Mutharika said it is not his prerogative to deny people their deepest wish.

“Bingu’s government constructed this road. Bingu wanted Karonga and Chitipa to have good roads. Today, it is the will of the people in Karonga and Chitipa that we must remember Bingu.

Your elders sat down and agreed that the Karonga-Chitipa Road must be renamed Bingu Highway. This is your goodwill for Bingu,” said he to a deafening applause from the crowd.

Before the rally President Mutharika met people whose property was destroyed by floods months ago where he donated K5 million to alleviate their problems.

He advised them to relocate to upper land and plant more trees to avoid a repeat of last year's disaster.

“Let us plant forests along the rivers to stop the flooding of the rivers. Let us plant many trees to combat effects of climate change,” he said.

He later assured them of continued government support in their dire times.

“Government is here to support you. We will always support you and we will always be with you. As your President, I will always be with you,” said he.

President Mutharika outlined to people of Karonga a number of projects his government is undertaking in the Northern Region.

For people of Karonga, government will upgrade the road to Songwe border to facilitate commerce and trade.

SLEEPING IN PARLIAMENT PROPOSE SOLUTION
During the week various Members of Parliament (MPs) were caught on camera sleeping in the National Assembly while deliberations were underway and some legislators have now suggested a solution to the problem. The MPs have called on government to provide a gym within Parliament arguing that the facility will prevent them from dozing off during parliamentary deliberations.George-ChapondaChaponda says considerations to be taken into account.Reacting to the request, Leader of the House George Chaponda said government will take into consideration the demand of the MPs arguing that some Parliaments have such facilities. “The business committee will look into the demand as most of them (MPs) can be tired with work and need some exercises,” said Chaponda.Chaponda further brushed aside media reports of legislators sleeping in the house while deliberations were in progress.“No one was sleeping here, we do have provocative statements that everyone needs to listen so we can’t have that time.
Actually myself I was not sleeping but someone having something with me took my pictures,” added Chaponda.Opposition People’s Party (PP) has since condemned the sleeping of MPs in Parliament arguing that Malawians cannot be happy to see that they receive allowances for sleeping.

MALAWI FARMERS ARE GROWINH FERTILIZER TREES
mW daily nkhani Smallholder farmers in Malawi are growing fertilizer trees on their farms to improve food production Malawi farmers to adopt fertilizer trees in order to fight hunger that is looming which will see almost half the population starving this year. The adoption of fertilizer trees on farms is a simple and effective way to improve soil fertility, food productivity and therefore contribute to food security. Yet, there is still little empirical research that documents the impact of fertilizer trees on food security among smallholder farmer households. Researchers from the World Agroforestry Centre carried out a study in Malawi to analyze the impact of the adoption of fertilizer trees on food security among smallholder farmers. Results from the study showed that fertilizer trees improve food security for adopters in maize-based mixed farming systems through increased value of production and productivity. Farm household survey – Malawi“The benefits of nitrogen fixing trees and shrubs such as Faidherbia albida (Msangu), Cajanus cajan (pigeon peas) and other leguminous crops are well known among farmers and government extension officers in Malawi,” said Jeanne Coulibaly, the lead researcher on the study. “However, their use by farmers for soil fertility management and in improving food production has been limited.” The researchers used data from a field survey on 338 rural farm households across selected agro-ecological zones of the country for the study. These households all grow maize alongside groundnuts, beans, vegetables and rice in some instances. Six districts in the north, central and south of Malawi were selected for the study. The districts are inhabited by different ethnic groups of different socio-cultural backgrounds, which may have an influence on adoption decisions of agroforestry practices. 40% of the sampled households had one or more fertilizer tree species on their farms. The mostly widely adopted species are Faidherbia albida, Tephrosia ssp and Glicirdia serpium. “As head of my household and a single mother of seven, I could not afford to buy fertilizer. I used to produce 300 kilogrammes of maize per acre and this did not give us enough food until the next harvest,” said Ms. Killness Banda, a farmer from Kagombe village in Lilongwe district. “After I started growing Tephrosia with the maize crop the yield increased to 800 kilogrammes per acre. Now we have adequate food.” Adoption of fertilizer trees is dictated by the perceived effectiveness of this technology in restoring fertility on degraded land Having a farm asset base is fundamental to facilitate adoption. “These conclusions have important implications for the design of policy actions to address impediments to adoption of fertilizer trees. Hence public policies to enhance adoption of fertilizer trees should emphasize on building knowledge base of farmers through training and facilitating access to credit or farm capital,” added Coulibaly. The outcomes presented in this study are average effects of the impact of fertilizer tree technologies. However, farmers are not homogeneous groups of individuals with similar biophysical and socio-economic characteristics. Further research is proposed to look at the differentiated impact of the fertilizer tree technologies across different biophysical and socio-economic endowments. This could focus on interactions of aspects such as changing weather and climate patterns, soil fertility, altitude, farm size, and land tenure, social differentiation and assets. This analysis would be conducted with large differentiated sample size acquiring comprehensive data on biophysical and socio-economic characteristics.

GONDWE PILL FOR SQUEEZED MALAWIANS Minister of Finance and Economic development Goodall Gondwe Minister Goodall Gondwe offset the bitter taste of a national budget overshadowed by a worsening economic turmoil by delivering a headline-seeking financial game plan the government is proposing to implement in the 2016/2017 financial year. Minister of Finance Goodall Gondwe: Budget plan is a caution operation Delivering his budget statement in Parliament on Friday, Gondwe noted that the country continues to face “significant resource constraints” due to continued deep reductions in donor support, He said : “Over and above that, it has been lamentable that our collection of tax and non-tax revenues has also declined ,” Gondwe said observed that there is ever-increasing demands for the delivery of critical public goods and services. Inside the 2016/2017 budget, there are number of major changes that Finance Minister has made in different Ministries and departments of government. Fisp cuts, irrigation gets more For over 11 years now government has been promoting agriculture in terms of Farm Income Subsidy Program -FISP Which enables rural farmers to buy fertilizer and seeds at a subsidized price as one way of ensuring that Malawians have enough food for their families. But according to 2016/2017 budget, government has reduced almost over half of last year’s allocation to the program which in 2015/2016 season was budgeted at K63.9 billion to K31.4 billion in 2016/2017 financial year. This means that number of beneficiaries in -FISP will go down again this year and farmers have to get ready to cough more from their pockets to buy farming materials like Fertilizer and seeds. In total the ministry have been given K198.5 billion with more allocations going towards Irrigation farming and purchasing of maize from other countries and local traders at Admarc in preparation for hunger which is expected to affect over three million Malawians. “The Government will continue to support winter cropping among these farmers, and will distribute subsidised fertilizers and treadle pumps. However, Honourable Members will agree with me that this support has been provided to smallholder farmers over a long time now, and it will be important to evaluate performance,” said Gondwe. He said the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development will analyse the projects and determine how best they should be transformed in order to justify future allocation of public resources. Gondwe conceded that the implementation of FISP has generally been a fiscal challenge because of the associated exchange rate risk which has been wholly borne by the government, leading to significant cost overruns every year. “ An additional challenge has been the targeting mechanism. Various studies have revealed that only about 50 percent of the actual beneficiaries of the programme were eligible beneficiaries,” he said. He said government will use public institutions through tenders in ensuring that hard-to-reach parts of the country are served in the FISP reformed program. No new jobs, salary for civil servants up 15% Government has in the budget made it clear that due to a number of factors it is not planning to employ people in the 2016/2017 financial year except 10,500 primary school teachers, 477 secondary school teachers, and also that the recruitment priority are mainly given in security institutions particularly the Malawi Police Service and Malawi Defence Force with others in the ministry of Agriculture and Health especially extension service workers. Civil servants at least have something to smile about as they will receive a 15 percent salary adjustment especially those with lower grades of the civil service. Gondwe said as the President Peter Mutharika has repeatedly said, it is important for Malawians to recognize that budget support from bilateral donors is “unlikely to resume”. Therefore, he said, Malawi must learn to manage its affairs within the available resources. “This is not the time to expect large yearly salary increments from the Government.” Good news The budget statement announced the removal customs duty on power voltage regulations which was at 5%. Government has also announced the removal of 10% import duty on surgical gloves. K3 billion has been allocated towards University students with loads which is being run and registered by the Higher Education Students Loans and Grants Board doubling the allocation from last year’s K1.5 billion.
JUSTICE TEMBENU TELL MALAWI PARLIAMENT ALL ALBINO CASES Justice minister Samuel Tembenu has said all cases involving attacks and killings of people with albinism are under review. Tembenu: Albino cases under review Tembenu said this in parliament on Friday after legislators temporary set aside their political differences to condemn the recent spate of the killings. The Justice Minister said the cases are under review because of lenient sentences in some cases. Speaker Richard Msowoya had allowed a petition from Fedoma to be discussed in the 193 strong House. On Thursday, Bon Kalindo, Mulanje South MP told the House that those involved in the killings should be handed down death sentences and themselves killed instead of life sentences. Meanwhile, Chief Justice Andrew Nyirenda has since directed that cases of abductions and killings of people with albinism should be handled by chief resident magistrates, principal resident magistrates and senior re
