FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION OF MALAWI SHOULD FOLLOW THE NATION IN ZIMBABWE

Football Association of Malawi (Fam) is facilitating that supporters should follow the national football team to Zimbabwe to cheer the Flames in their almost a formality 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match to be played on Sunday.

Matola said this is a response to numerous requests from the supporters.Fam’s Commercial & Marketing Director Limbani Cliff Matola said supporters are expected to contribute MK30,000 for the return trip which includes free entry tickets to the match.
“It became apparently clear that with the overwhelming interest that we are receiving, the patriotic supporters would still go ahead to travel to Zimbabwe even without us coming in,” Matola said.
“So our coming in is barely to make the arrangement formal and organised. “The K30,000 is for transportation to and fro Zimbabwe, the entry ticket.”
He said the supporters will have to fend for themselves in terms of food and accomodation.
Zimbabwe lead the Group L with eight points, followed by Swaziland and Guinea, who tie on five points.
Malawi have two points from two draws against Guinea and Swaziland.
If the Flames win their two remaining matches, against Zimbabwe on Sunday and the last against Swaziland and Zimbabwe go on to lose their last match against Guinea, they will tie at 8 points.
But should Guinea win their remaining games they will have 11 points. If they will draw with Swaziland and beat Zimbabwe,  they will have nine points.
It’s really a tall order for the Flames to think that some miracle can happen from the other contestants of dropping points.
Perhaps, what they can achieve is to beat the Flames and salvage some pride like what Fam president Walter Nyamilandu said on Tuesday when the team received a timely funding of K50 million from official sponsors Carlsberg for the Zimbabwe game as well as for the Cosafa.
He urged the youthful Flames squad to fight their lungs out and defeat Zimbabwe to boost their morale ahead of the Cosafa tournament.
“Take this game very seriously because it wil be a game changer for you,” he said. “Walk the talk and take the bull by the horn, the country is expecting a good result after failing to register a win in this Nations Cup campaign.
“Zimbabwe might be considering you as underdogs but go and surprise them. If you win against Zimbabwe, then it will
“Show that the team’s rebuilding exercise is a success by beating Zimbabwe and winning the Cosafa title,” he said.
How they stand:

MALAWI PASTOR WITH ALBINISM STOPS SERVING FLOCK IN FEAR

A pastor with albinism has stopped serving his flock and going to church in Mulanje because of the increased number of attacks on people with albinism.
“The situation is not conducive for me to be going out to preach. I don’t even go out on longer distances in fear I will be the next victim,” he said.Clement Dayile of Christ Citadel Church said he now fears for his life and had no choice but to temporarily abandon his flock until the situation improves.
This follows the brutal killing of 38 year old Fletcher Masina from a dimba where he was working last week in Ntcheu and was found with his hands, arms and private parts chopped off.
President Peter Mutharika told the BBC in an interview aired Monday that he had seen the picture of dead Masina and described it as sickening.
He condemned the murder.
Mutharika slammed the belief among some Malawian residents, describing the superstition as foolish and ignorant.
“The people who are telling people that it makes people rich are not even rich. They are wearing rags. How can a person like this make your rich if he himself cannot make himself rich?” he said.
Emmie Mbewe, a Macoha official from Mulanje said she failed to conduct a survey in the district to find out how many people with albinism are in the district because people with albinism fear for their lives once they are told to congregate at a specified place.
Citizen Alliance chairperson Edward Chileka Banda has since told the government to get Malawi Army soldiers out of Dzalanyama forest where they are protecting trees to go and protect people with albinism.
Malawi recently sent officials to neighbouring Tanzania in a bid to gain knowledge on how to deal with the attacks.

Farmers Union of Malawi (FUM) says tobacco farmers should be allowed to decide prices of their leaf.
President for FUM Alfred Kapichira Banda said it is sad that buyers and government are at the forefront in deciding prices.
”Tobbaco farmers are sidelined in making prices of tobacco when the farmers are the ones who cultivate the green gold but are not allowed to price it,” said Band
According to Banda, government and buyers do not farm so they must leave the pricing to the farmers themselves. He added that the farmers are the ones who knows how much it cost them to bring out quality tobacco so they are supposed to have a huge say in setting prices.
Banda also called on all stakeholders including tobacco farmers to come together to formulate a Tobbaco Act that is fair for all.
Every year tobacco farmers in the country protest about low prices and high rejection rates at the auction floors.

MALAWI AN VENDOR IN
EKWENDENI HAVE BRANDED

Malawian vendors in Ekwendeni have branded a newly constructed free market as ‘Ndata’ saying the place is not conducive for business.
“This place is so desolate and far from our customers thus we have named it ” Ndata, ” said Ackim Jere, a tomato trader.
Established that these vendors have dumped the market and are not interested to use it despite several calls from the district council. Instead, they have just agreed to be plying their trade along the M1 road, a decision the council has described as risky.

Nevertheless, the market chairman, Griffin Soko blamed the district council for choosing a poor location to build the market. He wished if council officials would have consulted widely before proceeding with plans for the project. “Look, even the Electricity Supply Cooperation of Malawi (ESCOM) is failing to connect power to the market. This is another reason vendors hate the market,” he said.“Business minded people realize the importance of the location where they must ply their trade. In this main road, business is fair and we can’t stop trading here,” said Anthony Beza, another trader.
On his part, district commissioner for Mzimba, Thomas Chirwa, expressed worry at the tendency of vending in the main road, saying it remains risky to vendors. He then urged them to go back to the market and wait for the electricity connection which his office is negotiating with ESCOM.
“That’s worrisome and stressing because in course of them trading near or even inside the road as they do, anything terrible can happen. I urge them to start using the market we built for them, as they wait for electricity, ” said Chirwa.
Ekwendeni market was once consumed by fire before the district council built a new market some metres away from the main road.
Vendors from here are not alone in shunning markets as their colleagues in Mzuzu are also shunning their new market on grounds of poor business location.

KATENGEZA SLAPED FOR FIVE YEARS IN JAIL

High Court in Lilongwe on Tuesday sentenced cashgate convict Angella Katengeza to five years imprisonment for theft and money laundering amounting to MK105.9 million.
Katengeza was charged together with former assistant director of tourism Leonard Kalonga who is waiting his sentence for conspiring to use the former’s Faith Construction Company to defraud government.

Judge Fiona Mwale of High Court found Katengeza guilty of theft and money laundering from government coffers.

The defense lawyer Gilbert Khonyongwa, who had asked the court to consider handing his client a non-custodial sentence, said he will discuss with the convict on whether to appeal or not.

State Prosecutor and Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Deputy Director Reyneck Matemba welcomed the custodial sentence, saying theft and money laundering are among serious offences in the country and custodial sentences are more ideal.

Allegations of the massive looting of government money became public following the shooting of the finance ministry's then budget director Paul Mphwiyo in September 2013.

MOZAMBIQUE ROAD NOW ITS ABAD ROUTE TO PASS

Malawians traveling to and through Mozambique risk of losing lives following clashes between Renamo and Mozambican government forces.
Truck drivers, business operators, and travellers to South Africa are among the groups of Malawians who usually pass through Mozambique.
On Monday, a Malawian truck driver (name withheld) said he has witnessed people in the country being chopped to death.
The driver said he was on his way back to Malawi and his truck was loaded with clinker for cement processing when he was stopped by Renamo rebels after they blocked the road with lorries.
“Besides my truck there were small cars for people in Mozambique, they asked me where I am coming from (my country) and I saw them giving each other signs.
“Then one came at my front and started asking me questions in Chichewa and after that they told me to follow them and show them what was in my truck,” said the driver.

He added that the soldiers turned to the other group and after noting them to be Mozambicans the soldiers poured petrol on the vehicles and burnt the cars together with people inside.
“I have been lucky that am alive after I called my wife that I will be a deceased husband to her, they told me that they have spared my life because my country is keeping Mozambicans peacefully and it will be unfair for me (Malawian) to be killed,” added the driver.
A fortnight ago four Malawians were killed while three others suffered gunshot wounds after they were attacked by soldiers in Mozambique.
Malawi government through Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Francis Kasaila warned Malawians travelling to South Africa to avoid using the Tete Province route, saying it is highly insecure following the renewed fighting between the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo) and Mozambique National Resistance

The Immigration department in Mchinji has netted 12 people from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) for trying to settle in the district without authorization.

According to the district’s immigration publicist Andida Mando, the 12 Congo nationals were caught in Kaombe village in the district on Saturday night while they were looking for a place to settle.
ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTSMando said the foreigners included seven children and five adults. He said villagers in the area were surprised to see the foreigners who were moving up and down the village looking for a place to settle.
Community policing members caught the immigrants and they handed them to the district’s immigration department.
The 12 admitted to have entered the country illegally but said they are running away from cruel soldiers in their nation who are brutally beating men for no reasons.
Reports from the publicist shows that the immigrants were left in the village by a truck driver who mercifully took them to Malawi but the foreigners did not ask why he left them there.
Meanwhile the immigrants have been taken to Ndzaleka refugee camp.
