MBC FLIES PROPRIETOR OF DAVINA FURNITURES TO CHINA











Kasenza earned the month-long trip after emerging winner in the entrepreneurship of small scale enterprise category in last year’s MBC’s Innovations Awards.  








“This is a one-in-a-lifetime opportunity and a dream come true for me,” said Kasenza in an interview before his departure at Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe.

He explained that the trip would provide him with a chance to expose his talent on an international platform while learning from fellow furniture makers in China.

In her remarks, MBC's Public Relations Officer Thembi Malinki said the awardees’ international trips are also supplementary to President Mutharika’s Buy Malawi Strategy as they sell Malawian skill and expose local products on the international market.

Kasenza, also a former lecturer of Lilongwe Technical College, has since challenged youths in the country to always stay focused and never give up on their dream citing his respective achievement as an example to emulate.

Each one of the ten last year’s awardees will fly to China and Egypt under the sponsorship of the respective embassies to Malawi.

The Lilongwe based furniture maker is third in line.

KARONGA CHITIPA CHIEFS POLITICIANS















In honoring the wishes of people of Karonga and Chitipa and the works of late Bingu wa Mutharika, President Arthur Peter Mutharika on Friday endorsed the renaming of the Karonga-Chitipa Road to Bingu Highway.

Traditional and religious leaders and common people from the two districts have good memories of Bingu because he ended their multi-decade transport problems. As such they have been requesting the Presidency to consider the name change.

Speaking at Baka Community Day Secondary School - where the President made the pronouncement- Paramount Chief Kyungu said people from the two districts know what they are talking about when they ask for special reverence for Bingu in relation to what he did.

“Bingu died and was buried. He didn't take the road with him. We are all using the road. It’s not only DPP people using it. Let's learn to honour people who do great things for us,” said Kyungu.

Addressing the large gathering President Mutharika said it is not his prerogative to deny people their deepest wish.

“Bingu’s government constructed this road. Bingu wanted Karonga and Chitipa to have good roads. Today, it is the will of the people in Karonga and Chitipa that we must remember Bingu.

Your elders sat down and agreed that the Karonga-Chitipa Road must be renamed Bingu Highway. This is your goodwill for Bingu,” said he to a deafening applause from the crowd.

Before the rally President Mutharika met people whose property was destroyed by floods months ago where he donated K5 million to alleviate their problems.

He advised them to relocate to upper land and plant more trees to avoid a repeat of last year's disaster.

“Let us plant forests along the rivers to stop the flooding of the rivers. Let us plant many trees to combat effects of climate change,” he said.

He later assured them of continued government support in their dire times.

“Government is here to support you. We will always support you and we will always be with you. As your President, I will always be with you,” said he.

President Mutharika outlined to people of Karonga a number of projects his government is undertaking in the Northern Region.

For people of Karonga, government will upgrade the road to Songwe border to facilitate commerce and trade.

SLEEPING IN PARLIAMENT PROPOSE SOLUTION
During the week various Members of Parliament (MPs) were caught on camera sleeping in the National Assembly while deliberations were underway and some legislators have now suggested a solution to the problem. The MPs have called on government to provide a gym within Parliament arguing that the facility will prevent them from dozing off during parliamentary deliberations.George-ChapondaChaponda says considerations to be taken into account.Reacting to the request, Leader of the House George Chaponda said government will take into consideration the demand of the MPs arguing that some Parliaments have such facilities. “The business committee will look into the demand as most of them (MPs) can be tired with work and need some exercises,” said Chaponda.Chaponda further brushed aside media reports of legislators sleeping in the house while deliberations were in progress.“No one was sleeping here, we do have provocative statements that everyone needs to listen so we can’t have that time.
Actually myself I was not sleeping but someone having something with me took my pictures,” added Chaponda.Opposition People’s Party (PP) has since condemned the sleeping of MPs in Parliament arguing that Malawians cannot be happy to see that they receive allowances for sleeping.

MAN SUICIDE BY HANGING A 45 year-old man in Ntchisi district has committed suicide by hanging, police say.The man, Gwazeni Chimpitila, was on Thursday found dead by his relatives in Pitala Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Kalumo in Ntchisi.Death hangingAccording to Ntchisi police public relations officer Gladson M’bumpha, the man left his house on Wednesday around 7PM without telling his wife his destination but at that time he was drunk. He did not return home that day and on Thursday his relatives found him hanging from a tree in his garden which is about one kilometre away from his house.The police and medical officers from Ntchisi District Hospital visited the scene. The health workers conducted a post-mortem which revealed that Chimpitila died due to strangulation and the police declared that there was no foul play.Chimpitila hailed from Abulamu Village, T/A Kalumo in Ntchisi.
