Malawian truck driver arrested in Zimbabwe for smuggling 900kg of chamba. A
Malawian truck driver have been arrested by Criminal Investigation Department officers in Mutare in Zimbabwe. Alfred Manjakawawa Masonyenzo, 37, was driving a South African registered truck (VRC 326 GP) with a Malawian registered trailer. It is alleged that Masonyenzo was trying to smuggle 900 kilograms of Indian hemp (Chamba) through Forbes border post. Police in Zimbabwe have so far confirmed the arrest. According to Manicaland police spokesperson, Inspector Tavhiringwa Kakohwa, police were tipped off that a truck driver was carrying a contraband of indian hemp. Detectives were dispatched to Forbes Border Post where they impounded the truck and forced Masoyenzo to drive to the city centre. According to police, Masoyenzo’s papers indicated that he was carrying a consignment of 1 200 bags of wheat bran from Malawi to South Africa. The detectives requested Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) officials for assistance and instructed the driver to remove everything from the trailer for a thorough inspection. With the assistance of sniffer dogs, police discovered 38 bags of indian hemp weighing 900 kilograms. The packed plastic bags were hidden underneath wheat sacks in the back of the truck. Police said the driver is assisting police with investigations which is still underway and they expect more arrests.
