US Ambassador to Malawi, Virginia Palmer says patriotism is one of the pillars that have made America a great nation.
Ambassador Palmer was speaking in Lilongwe during celebrations to mark 240th Independence of the United States of America.p
In his remarks, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Francis Kasaila said Malawi can learn a lot from the United States of America.
Kasaila, who is also the parliamentarian for Nsanje Central, urged Malawians to embrace three pillars of integrity, patriotism and hard work for the country to develop.
“Malawi needs responsible and productive citizens, productive citizens to achieve socioeconomic development,” said Kasaila.
Recently, President Peter Mutharika called for unity among leaders and the public in the development process.
According to the Malawi, lack of integrity and unpatriotic spirit among some Malawians hinders the country’s progress in development.
Delivering the State of Nation Address which marked the opening of the 2016/17 budget meeting, Mutharika urged politicians and all Malawians to be united and together fight for one common goal of ending poverty.
He said Malawi as country is faced with a number of challenges and that government alone could not manage to fight and that it required concerted efforts from all sectors including politicians.
“As a small player in a highly complex, volatile and globalized economy, we are bound to face many more challenges along the way due to externally induced pressures and shocks.
“At fifty plus as an independent nation , I feel we are at the critical stage of development where patriotism , hard work, discipline, commitment to duty and above all selflessness and sacrifice must be exemplified by all of us including members of this august House. All the efforts by the Government shall be in vain if we do not bury our differences and put the interests of our country and people first,” said President Mutharika.
The Addis Ababa University of Ethiopia will honour President Peter Arthur Mutharika with a Degree of Doctor of Letters on July 9.
According to a letter from the University’s President, the Senate of the University gave the approval while its Board of Governors has given full recognition of the selection of Professor Peter Mutharika for the honour.

ba University.
The University says it has decided to honour Professor Mutharika, who is also the Regional Universities Forum Champion for Higher Education in Africa, co-convener of the International Commission on Financing Global Education and Charles Nagel Professor of International and Comparative Constitutional Law Emeritus of the Washington University in the USA for his great and outstanding contribution in academia in the world which has inspired and continues to inspire other scholars.
President Mutharika has since accepted the conferment of the honour of the Degree of Letters.
Former Silver Strikers forward Atusaye Nyondo has joined Bloemfontein Celtic from University of Pretoria.The 25 year-old Malawi international, who also had a stint at SuperSport United,

3months later after Alex Divorced me just because i saved his life by accepting that the robbers should have 5ex with me rather than killing him, it was so painful
that he divorced me, but i must move on with my life, My parents blamed me of marrying Alex, my father was so angry to see me back home.

So while in my parents house, i started my water business again, i stared selling in bags, i will carry it on my head and be moving round the street, i was
never ashamed, everybody have known me as WATER SELLER, at a point i stopped carrying it on my head round the street, i now keep it at a particular place,
many people have known me already, so they always come and buy. later i started supplying the sachet water to people, i no more sale one by one, i now
sale in bags, from there i bought a fridge and the business was growing, finally i now have a small company where i produce my own table water, from small
company, it migrated to a big company, after some years, i bought a land and i builded a big company for the table water production, i bought two cars, i gave one
to my parents, this was just like a miracle to me, am now a big woman.

After five years in the business, i can now boost of 3 cars, two big houses and many other things.
I got information from someone that my formal husband Alex is now very poor and cannot even feed himself, one day i went out with one of my car, on the way the
car broke down, so i sent someone to go and call me a mechanic to come and know whats wrong with the car, after 5mins, the person i sent arrived with a mechanic,
i started explaining to the mechanic how the car stopped and i dont really know what happened, when i looked close to the mechanic man, behold it was Alex my
formal husband, so you are now a mechanic Alex? [i asked him].
He was surprised and he rushed to hug me but i pushed him out immediately and i looked for another mechanic to repair my car.
I can never forgive Alex, someone i saved his life and he drove me out of his house and divorce me, now that i have made money, he want to take me back.

After six months from the day i met alex, my business was increasing more and more, i now produce bottle water and can juice, Oneday Alex called me, i dont
know how he got my number, he started begging me to forgive him, i told him i will never and can never forgive him, i rather die than to forgive him.
Its was his turn then, but now its my own turn, Life is turn by turn, what goes around comes around.

some months later, i fell sick, i was taken to many hospitals but no solution to my illness, the sickness was eating me up and i was dying slowly, none of the
doctors could figure out what the problem was, if its money issue i can pay, after i might have gone to many hospitals, i now discover that the sickness is
spiritual, so i went to one powerful man of God to pray for me, after the man of God finished praying for me, he told me that the solution to my
illness is forgiveness, he said that someone broke my heart long ago and the person have already apologized to me but i did not accept, he said if i want to be
free i should forgive the person. immediately i remembered Alex my formal husband, i narrated the story to the pastor and told him that i can never forgive alex,
He pleaded with me to forgive him but i said no that i can never forgive him.

The colour dream of former president the late Bingu wa Mutharika—the Nsanje Inland Port—is fast fading away as the port, which cost the country $20 million, is now hanging above a muddy swamp following the drying up of the Shire River on the port’s section.
Currently, the Shire River water levels at Nsanje Inland Port have decreased to lowest levels in decades, exposing the riverbed which is now characterised by cracked mud signifying the impact of intense heat in the Lower Shire.

The drying of the Shire River vindicates Mozambique government’s position on the issue which questioned the viability of the project by looking at the ever-decreasing water levels in both Shire and Zambezi rivers.
The drying of the port this year is a result of the dwindling of water inflows in the Shire River and Lake Malawi due to the El Nino weather episode in the 2015/16 rainy season which has also affected power generation in the country.
The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) has warned that the country should brace for prolonged hours of black-outs following the continued dwindling of water flows in the Shire and Lake Malawi.
Escom announced in April this year that the flow of Shire River is still around 170 cubic metres per second (cumecs). Although the figure was an increase over the previous month, it was still far below the flow of about 264 cumecs required for optimum power generation.
The other major tributaries of the Shire River are Mwanza and Ruo Rivers but Escom public relations officer George Mituka said in April that due to the inconsistent rainfall pattern especially in the southern areas and downstream of Kamuzu Barrage at Liwonde, the tributaries are not making significant contribution to improving Shire River flows.
In 2015, Mozambique Minister of Transport Carlos Mesquita said the viability of the waterway project could only be assessed if the consultant determines the behaviour of water levels in the Shire and Zambezi rivers, the cost of maintenance of the waterway and the rights of the fishing families along the two rivers.
He casted doubt if Mozambique would adopt the feasibility study report conducted by Hydroplan GmbH, on the navigability of the rivers which has been a dominant feature from the neighbouring country’s side as evidenced by its sending of mixed signals on the matter.
Ministry of Transport and Public Works, which is the line ministry for the project, did not respond to a Weekend Nation questionnaire, but the government spokesperson, Minister of Information Patricia Kaliati insisted that the project was well on course despite the climatic challenges and the complications of a regional setup that it has taken.
Said Kaliati: “The project is on and that is the official position of the government of Malawi. It has been adopted by the Southern African Development Community (Sadc) as a regional project. These things take time but work is being done and you shall see it soon. Although the climate issues are there, the technicians had already taken all those issues into consideration.”
Sadc, through the African Development Bank (AfDB), in 2011 pumped in US$ 3.5 million (K2.5 billion) into the comprehensive feasibility study on the Shire-Zambezi Waterway project which was initially projected to cut Malawi’s transportation of goods costs to and from the Indian Ocean ports by 40 percent.
The project had also roped in Zambia and Zimbabwe to make it more regional based. The countries adopted the study that gave a green light to the navigability of the two rivers.
However, a senior lecturer in Environmental Sciences from the Physics and Biochemical Sciences department at the Polytechnic in Blantyre, Chikumbusko Kaonga said recent climatic factors have made the project unattainable.
“If we base our arguments on current water levels and climate change
issues, then the materialisation of the project is almost impossible. However, there is hope in that there is a project (Shire River Basin Management Project) which is trying to restore the Shire River basin to its former glory. On the other hand, government may be ready but the involvement of other countries such as Zambia and
Mozambique makes the whole thing very tricky,” he said.
Additionally, the expert said feasibility studies which look at the practicality of proposed plans or method within a specific period of time may contain a margin of error.
“Since these are plans or methods, they may contain some errors in them as such they are not 100 percent correct. But the drying of the Shire River this year can be attributed to the dry spells that have hit the region as a result of the El Nino phenomenon. However, that does not make the feasibility study entirely incorrect,” he said.
A team of ministers from the regional grouping considered the report by consultants on the navigability of the Shire-Zambezi Waterway whose proposed route is from Nsanje in Malawi to Chinde, the small Mozambican town at the mouth of the Zambezi River into the Indian Ocean, stretching over a distance of 343 kilometres through Mozambican territory.
In 2012, Mozambique refused to allow the use of Zambezi River for commercial shipping but changed tune later when its Foreign Minister and Cooperation Oldemiro Baloi said experts from the two countries would collaborate on the feasibility study and environmental impact assessment.
Sadc director of Infrastructure and Services Remmy Makumbe in 2013 said the grouping had committed itself to coordinating the study and said it would include Zambia and Zimbabwe to ensure smooth running of the project.
Although in 2014 president Mutharika after attending the 34th Sadc Summit at Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe said Sadc had endorsed the project, in April 2016 Mozambique president Felipe Nyusi questioned the viability of the project, saying it was just an ambition by Zambia and Malawi to cut transportation costs, urging the two countries to explore other means.
The Malawi Under-17 National football team will face neighboring Zambia and Mozambique in the Cosafa Under-17 Championship set for this month in Mauritius.
Young Flames have been drawn against the defending champions Zambia in Group B which has also Madagascar and Mozambique.
According to Cosafa, the youth championship will be played from July 22nd to 31st July.
Hosts Mauritius are in 
Group A with former winners South Africa as well as Namibia and the Seychelles.
The tournament will be played at two venues in Mauritius, the George V Stadium in Curepipe and St. François Xavier Stadium in the capital Port Louis.
The last Cosafa Under-17 Championship was played in Zimbabwe in 2014 as part of the AUSC Region 5 Under-20 Youth Games and saw Zambia defeat the hosts 3-0 in the Final.
